1850 – U.S. Senator Thomas Benton complained that Florida’s Indian War was the most expensive and unmanageable in which the U.S. had ever been engaged. Benton went on to say that the war continued for seven years and was only finally terminated by changing the military campaign into an armed occupation by settlers. The passage of the Armed Occupation Act of 1842 encouraged 953 settler families to apply for permits to live on and develop unoccupied lands lying south of Palatka or Gainesville. The condition was to live on the land continuously for seven years and fight against the Indians.

1903 December 14 – Herbert A. Williams made application to the U.S. Postal Service to establish a post office at Wylly. Williams was granted permission, and the post office was in operation until Dec. 14, 1904, when it was discontinued and mail was distributed out of Rosewood, five miles to the west.

1945 September 06 – Hosiery manufacturers this week began the manufacture of nylon stockings when heavy stocks of nylon yard were released for civilian use. The DuPont Company estimate 360 million pairs of nylon hose can be produced within the next year. That figure would be enough to provide 11 pairs of hose for every woman in the county.
